Zarina Hashmi Born on 16 july 1937- 25April 2020. known professionally as Zarina, was an Indian-American artist and print maker based in New York city. Her work spans drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Associated with the minimalist movement, her work spans drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. During the 1980s, Zarina served as a board member of the New York faminist Art Institute and an instructor of papermaking workshops at the affiliated Women’s center for Learning. while on the editorial board of the feminist at journal Heresies, she contributed to the “Third World Women” issue.

Zarina Hashmi was born on 16 July 1937 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. she grew up in a culturally rich environment, with her father being a professor of mathematics and her mother belonging to a family og bibliophiles.

Zarina’s intrest in art development at an early age. she was exposed to calligraphy, miniature painting and Islamic architecture, which greatly influenced her artistic sensibilities.

In the 1950s, Zarina moved to Bangkok, Thailand, after marrying her husband, Saad Hashmi, a diplomat. living in various countries due to her husband’s postings, she continued to pursue her artistic interests by taking classes in painting and printmaking wherever they resided. Her exposure to different cultures and environments further shaped her artistic vision.

In 1960s, Zarina moved to paris, France where she studied prinmaking at the Ecole des Beauz-Arts. During this time, she was exposed to the western modernist art movements and developed her skills in woodblock printing. Zarina embraced minimalism, focusing on clean lines, geometric forms and a limited colour palette.

In 1974. Zarina relocated to New York city, where she settled and continued to develop her artistic practice. she explored themes of displacement, memory, and identify, often drawing maps, floor plans, and Architechtual elements as symbols of her personal and collective history.

Throughout her career, Zarina exhibited her art internationally, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her work was showcased in prestigious institutions such as the London, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.

She received critical acclaim for her contributions to contemporary art was awarded various honors, including the United States Artists Fellowship in 2008 and the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards in 2011

Her work remains influential and resonates with audiences worldwide. Zarina passed away on April 25, 2020 in London, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy.
